How to Choose an Impact Driver
An impact driver is designed to drive screws and other fasteners with bursts of rotational force. It complements a drill rather than replacing one for every job.
Editorial note: This is a general buying guide based on tool categories and common selection criteria, not a hands-on test or a ranking of verified individual products. Check manufacturer specifications before purchase.
Impact driver or drill?
A drill/driver is better for precise hole drilling and delicate fastening with an adjustable clutch. An impact driver is often useful for long screws, deck fasteners and repetitive fastening. If you do both jobs, a drill-and-impact combo can be convenient.
Compare the chuck and bit system
Most impact drivers use a 1/4-inch hex quick-change collet. Confirm that your bits are impact-rated and fit the tool. Standard round-shank drill bits usually require a suitable hex-shank adapter or a separate drill.
Control matters more than headline torque
Multiple speed or assist modes can reduce overtightening and cam-out. Compare trigger modulation, overall length, weight with battery and whether the tool has an LED work light. Very high torque is not automatically better for small screws.
Consider your battery platform
If you already have batteries and a charger from a compatible tool family, a bare-tool purchase may cost less overall. Verify the exact battery series and voltage compatibility, not just the brand name.
What to check before buying
Compare the manufacturer’s rated fastening performance, warranty, included batteries, charger, belt clip and return policy. Use appropriate eye protection and hearing protection when required.
Quick comparison by use case
| Your needs | What to prioritize |
|---|---|
| Furniture and cabinets | Compact model with good low-speed control |
| Decking and framing | Model with adequate fastening power and impact-rated bits |
| Mixed DIY work | Drill/impact combo kit if you need both tools |
