Corded versus cordless

Corded saws provide continuous power when an outlet is available. Cordless saws are convenient away from outlets, but runtime depends on battery size, material and blade choice.

Blade diameter and cut depth

Common saw sizes serve different jobs. Check the published maximum depth at 90° and 45° against the thickness of lumber you cut. A larger blade is not always necessary for small home projects.

Blade-left versus blade-right layout

Sight lines and comfort vary by design and user preference. Consider where the blade sits relative to your dominant hand, where the motor housing goes and how the base plate tracks a guide.

Features worth comparing

Look for a reliable blade guard, electric brake where available, bevel adjustment, dust extraction compatibility and a sturdy shoe. Choose a blade appropriate for the material and finish.

Safe setup and cuts

Support both sides of the workpiece without trapping the blade, set cut depth appropriately, keep hands out of the cutting path and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Never defeat a blade guard.
